Chapter 16 -- Starting Over

Monday, December 2

Maureen pulled into the parking lot of the post office on Pearl Road next to a black Beemer. Taking out a large ring with dozens of tiny keys, she flipped through them until she found one marked ‘3342.” Iliana Minor Johnson’s passport was in P.O. Box 3342. She slit the envelope with her fingernail and opened the small blue leatherette book. She smiled at her own photo. She looked fresh and pretty. The red wig and green contacts flattered her pale features. It was almost time to become Iliana. Jennifer’s experience at the cottage the other night was proof of that. Maureen was more than ready to move on.

She tucked the envelope into her bag and squatted. Her bulk made it difficult to check the mailboxes on the lower level. P.O. Box 2800 was empty. She sighed. Mark Stevenson’s so-called sister was still waiting for First Life to pay off. Maureen didn’t want to leave Cleveland until that money was deposited in her Swiss Bank account. Off balance, she struggled to stand.

“Here ya go.” A tall man held out his hand to help her.

Maureen startled with recognition. It was Kyle, the hunk who attended Jennifer’s aerobics class every week. “Thanks,” she said, lowering the timber of her voice as she put her hand into his.

“You look familiar. Have we met?” He asked as he pulled her upright. His eyes drifted downwards to her enormous bosom, a flirty grin on his lips.

Maureen straightened her clothes, shuttering her eyes behind the thick glasses. “I don’t think so.” Jennifer had thought Kyle was sexy, that he was attracted to her. What a laugh! He’s a pig like the rest of them, Maureen thought. She lifted her bag over her shoulder and started for the door.

Kyle put his hand on her elbow as they went out the glass doors. “You live in Strongsville? We must have run into each other before somewhere.”

“No, we haven’t.” She jerked her arm away and headed toward the Acura. He was a pushy pig too!

She felt him close behind her, too close. “Don’t get bent of out shape, ma’am. I didn’t mean to upset you. I love older women!”

Stung, she spun around, her fists clenched. “Look. I don’t know you. I don’t WANT to know you, okay?” She unlocked the Acura using her key fob.

He stepped back, his hands open in a mocking peace gesture, smiling the smile of a man who knew he was attractive. “What the hell happened to your door?” He appraised the damage. “Looks like someone kicked the hell out of it.”

His deep raspy voice chilled her. Was he the one? She got into the car and locked the doors. Kyle tapped on the window. “Look, I have a good man who can fix that for you.” He held a business card against the window. It said, “Kyle Parker, 440-729-STUD.”

Maureen put the car in reverse and backed out of the space. Kyle stood in the parking lot, laughing as she drove off.
